Gum Disease
In 2012 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the results of a study that concluded that over 47% of adults over 30 have mild, moderate, or severe periodontitis.
Caused by plaque, gum disease is an infection of the tissue that surrounds and supports your teeth. Typically painless, as it worsens it can lead to tooth loss in adults.
According to MouthHealthy.org, here is a list of the warning signs of gum disease:
- gingivitis (inflammation of the gums)
- periodontitis (advanced gum disease)
Depending on the severity, the dentist may have to refer the patient to a periodontist to treat the infection.
According to MouthHealthy.org, here are a list of the warning signs of gum disease:
- gums that bleed easily
- red, swollen, tender gums
- gums that have pulled away from the teeth
- persistent bad breath or bad taste
- permanent teeth that are loose or separating
- any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
- any change in the fit of partial dentures
The sooner gum disease is treated, the better.
Daily brushing, a smart diet and regular dental visits are the best way to prevent the problem.
